Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent addressed concerns over alleged welfare fraud involving Somali immigrants in a recent appearance on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” He specifically mentioned an ongoing investigation into links between fraudulent activities and terrorism, particularly with Al-Shabaab.

In a strong statement during Sunday’s broadcast of “Face the Nation,” which is hosted by Margaret Brennan, Bessent condemned what he termed as widespread fraud within certain Somali-run programs in Minnesota. According to reports, Somalias have allegedly defrauded Americans out of over $1 billion through deceptive practices tied to government assistance funds.

Bessent ordered an investigation into where these funds went, suspecting they may have been diverted towards supporting terrorist organizations like Al-Shabaab. This inquiry comes amidst accusations that the alleged fraud could potentially fund global terrorism, raising concerns about misuse of taxpayer money.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s administration is now under scrutiny over this issue. Bessent specifically cited the state and its government in his comments regarding potential involvement from local authorities.

Walz has been directed to cooperate fully with Treasury officials as they investigate how Minnesota taxpayers’ funds might have indirectly benefited terrorist organizations through these fraudulent schemes targeting public assistance programs, including alleged welfare fraud cases.
