New York City Mayor Eric Adams has issued a stark warning ahead of this fall’s mayoral election, insisting the city must avoid regression under new leadership. “This city is in good shape, and we need to make sure we don’t go backwards,” Adams stated, per Gothamist. He echoed former mayor Michael Bloomberg’s advice to “Don’t f it up,” reflecting his resolve as he nears the end of his term.
Adams’ remarks come amid tensions with Zohran Mamdani, a left-leaning candidate whose policies clash with his on critical issues, particularly public safety and police roles. The mayor highlighted disagreements over plans to close Rikers Island, arguing that Mamdani’s approach to mental health crises and criminal justice reforms risks endangering residents. Adams also criticized Mamdani’s economic proposals, including tax increases on wealthy individuals and corporations, which he claimed would harm business growth and job creation.
Earlier this week, Adams announced he would not seek re-election, citing concerns that his policies would be undone by Mamdani’s agenda. He listed specific priorities linked to the candidate, such as reducing Rikers Island’s population, dissolving the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group, and eliminating the agency’s gang database. “When you talk about safety, you have to be very clear and very focused,” Adams warned, expressing doubt in Mamdani’s vision for the city.
