A manager at Nakomis Day Care Center in Minneapolis reported that documents—including children’s enrollment records and checkbooks—were stolen during a break-in on Tuesday. Nasrulah Mohamed, the facility’s 20-year-old manager, stated a suspect entered through the kitchen rear of the building, damaging walls and breaking into the office before taking “important documentation.”

However, according to a preliminary report from the Minneapolis Police Department, no items were actually reported stolen by officers. The police noted that while the center later provided additional details about the incident, an updated report was not immediately available.

The claim follows a viral YouTube video by right-wing influencer Nick Shirley alleging dozens of Somali-run daycare centers in Minneapolis misappropriated “upwards of $100 million” in state funds. A Minnesota Department of Human Services website listing indicates Nakomis Day Care Center operates legally and is licensed for up to 71 children.

Mohamed told the Minnesota Star Tribune that the breach has caused “immense fear” within the community, particularly as Somali immigrants face heightened scrutiny amid ongoing investigations into alleged fraud. “We’re honest; We don’t do any fraud or nothing,” he said.
