A 19-year-old Indonesian gymnast died in Penza, Russia, after sustaining a severe neck injury during training, according to the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation. Naufal Takdir Al Bari succumbed to his injuries after 12 days in intensive care at GA Zakharyin Hospital.

The federation confirmed the athlete’s passing, stating he fell “awkwardly” into a foam pit while practicing on a high bar. Russian gymnastic officials revealed that Al Bari was not prepared for the complex skill he attempted, noting the incident occurred as he trained for the 2025 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Indonesia and potential qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Indonesian Gymnastics Chairperson Ita Yuliati described Al Bari as a “talented young athlete” and expressed deep sorrow over his loss, calling it a “deep blow and sorrow for us.” Russian officials said they investigated the case, emphasizing that the athlete’s lack of readiness contributed to the tragedy. Vasily Titov, vice president of the Russian Gymnastics Federation, stated they had “done everything that needed to be done” and shared condolences with Indonesian authorities.

The specific stunt Al Bari was performing remains undisclosed.
