Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced her resignation from the position today, effective June 30, 2026. According to her formal resignation letter, she stepped down to support her husband, Abraham, who has been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer.
Gabbard notified President Donald Trump during a meeting in the Oval Office Friday, stating that “my husband faces major challenges in the coming weeks and months” and that she must “step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle.” In her letter, she expressed deep gratitude for the trust placed in her during her tenure leading the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
The resignation follows Gabbard’s alignment with President Trump on key issues, including testimony regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities during Operation Epic Fury. She described Abraham as “my rock” throughout their marriage, emphasizing his steadfast support amid her deployments and political campaigns. Gabbard noted she could not “in good conscience ask him to face this fight alone” while remaining in her demanding role.
Her departure occurs after a period of limited public visibility compared to other administration officials, including CIA Director John Ratcliffe, whom President Trump has frequently highlighted for contributions. Gabbard’s resignation marks the latest shift in the intelligence community following recent personnel changes within the office.
