U.S. officials have reiterated their commitment to facilitating dialogue between Russia and Ukraine, with Ambassador Matthew Whitaker emphasizing that President Donald Trump will not impose conditions on either side for peace negotiations. Speaking on Fox Business, Whitaker stated that the administration seeks to create a framework where both parties can agree on terms without external pressure. “The president is focused on finding leverage to bring them together, but he won’t dictate the parameters,” Whitaker said, underscoring the administration’s neutral stance.

Trump himself acknowledged the challenges of brokering talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelenskiy, noting their deep-seated animosity. “They hate each other,” the president remarked, adding that he would likely dominate any such discussion. This sentiment aligns with Trump’s broader strategy of engaging Moscow directly, a departure from his predecessor’s approach. Last month, Trump held a summit with Putin in Alaska and pledged to arrange talks between the two leaders, a move critics argue risks legitimizing Russia’s actions.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov praised Washington’s “common-sense” stance on the conflict but accused European NATO members of obstructing peace efforts. Meanwhile, Zelenskiy has expressed openness to negotiations without preconditions but rejected Moscow as a potential meeting venue. His refusal to compromise on this issue has drawn sharp criticism, with analysts suggesting his rigid position undermines prospects for resolution.

Despite repeated calls for dialogue, talks between Russia and Ukraine have stalled, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirming recent discussions are “paused.” As the conflict persists, U.S. efforts to mediate face mounting skepticism, particularly given Zelenskiy’s reluctance to engage in meaningful diplomacy.
