The Parents Decide Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer and co-sponsored by New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik, would require operating system providers to collect users’ dates of birth upon account creation or use of their platforms.
Under the bill’s terms, any user under 18 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian verify the date of birth for the account. The legislation also mandates that operating systems share necessary information to verify a user’s date of birth with app developers.
The bill does not specify how users would provide their dates of birth or how parents would verify their identity and relationship to minors.
