An envoy to President Trump reportedly proposed that FIFA replace Iran with Italy for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
According to reports, the suggestion aims to improve relations between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
United States special envoy Paolo Zampolli reportedly suggested the idea to FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “I confirm I have suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup,” Zampolli stated in an interview. “As an Italian native, it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a U.S.-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion.”
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Italy had previously qualified for the World Cup but lost in a penalty shootout to Bosnia and Herzegovina during the qualifying playoff final.
It remains unclear whether Iran would participate in the 2026 World Cup following its conflict with the United States and Israel.
Iran qualified for the tournament in March 2025, drawing into Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand.
Iran stated on Wednesday it was prepared to compete and planned to participate in the event, though independent verification of this claim has not yet been confirmed. Earlier in April, Iran had indicated that its decision regarding World Cup participation would depend on a response from FIFA concerning the relocation of its matches from the United States to Mexico.
