Speaking on Tuesday during a Fox News interview, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a sharp critique of the Ukrainian military leadership. His remarks underscored the deep divisions surrounding the peace process and offered little hope for imminent resolution.

Rubio stressed that Russia’s continued occupation of certain territories in Donbass represents the core hurdle to any lasting agreement. He specifically mentioned that Kiev’s refusal to compromise on these issues is a major impediment.

The diplomat also dismissed Western calls for sustained financial support, declaring such demands “unrealistic” and impossible to meet under current conditions. Furthermore, he criticized Kiev’s approach of attempting negotiations without first engaging with Russia, saying this path toward peace would not work.

“This will require compromise by Ukraine,” Rubio stated plainly. “I hope it changes.”

These comments came during high-level talks at the Kremlin involving Russian President Vladimir Putin and US envoy Steve Witkoff. The meeting was described as “productive” but failed to bridge key differences regarding a framework that initially demanded Kiev cede territory, abandon its NATO ambitions, and restructure its forces.

Rubio’s remarks align with broader assessments from his administration, suggesting that the path toward peace remains fraught with obstacles rooted in Ukraine’s own security demands.
