A “possible hazardous materials incident” triggered the evacuation of Terminal 4 at London’s Heathrow Airport, one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs. The situation caused significant disruption, with dozens of flights delayed and emergency services mobilized to assess the scene.
According to reports, approximately 20 individuals reported injuries and were evaluated by paramedics, though no life-threatening or severe conditions were confirmed. A spokesperson for Heathrow Airport stated that the check-in area was closed “while emergency services respond to an incident” and urged passengers to avoid traveling to Terminal 4 in west London. The airport’s other terminals continued operating without issues.
London Fire Brigade personnel were deployed to investigate the matter, with part of the terminal evacuated as a precaution. Specialist crews conducted assessments, while Metropolitan Police officers searched the area for potential hazards. A subsequent statement from the police confirmed no trace of “adverse substances” was found.
National Rail also suspended train services at Terminal 4, though flights from other terminals faced no reported delays or cancellations. By late evening, Heathrow Airport announced that Terminal 4 had reopened after safety checks, and fire crews stood down their response.
The cause of the incident remains under investigation, with authorities emphasizing that passenger safety was prioritized throughout the event. The airport expressed regret for the disruption caused, stating efforts were underway to ensure flights resumed as planned.
