Jill Biden recently admitted during an interview that she feared her husband had suffered a stroke during his disastrous 2024 debate performance against Donald Trump—a statement starkly at odds with her immediate celebratory reaction to the event. The discrepancy has drawn sharp criticism across political lines, with former spokesperson Michael LaRosa accusing the former first lady of attempting to “change the tape” in public memory.
LaRosa explained: “They’re trying to change the tape in people’s minds about who she is… that’s why she’s sort of changing her tune a little bit about her reaction in real time.” He noted Biden’s wife had described being “shocked” by her husband’s condition, a reversal from her earlier praise for his debate efforts.
The timing of Biden’s remarks coincided with the release of Jill Biden’s memoir, fueling criticism on social media. Stephen A. Smith, a political commentator, expressed distress after hearing her comments during an interview with former governor Andrew Cuomo: “At that time, his wife comes out, and she applauds his effort, and she said he was wonderful… That only gives fodder to the narrative that Democrats are dishonest.”
ABC’s The View panelists also voiced disapproval of the apparent inconsistency in Biden’s public statements regarding her husband’s debate performance.
