Arkansas authorities confirmed a man was discovered dead at a campsite on Thursday following what is believed to be a bear attack. The Newton County Sheriff’s office reported that the victim, a 60-year-old man from Missouri, had sent photos of a bear to his family days before the incident.
The sheriff’s office stated the man was camping at Sam’s Throne near Mt. Judea when he failed to contact his family for several days. A deputy discovered his truck and campsite, which showed signs of a struggle and drag marks leading into the woods. The victim’s body was found several yards outside the campsite with injuries consistent with a large carnivore attack.
Sheriff Glenn Wheeler emphasized that the investigation is in its early stages but confirmed a bear was present at the site. He noted the case is “highly unusual” and warned residents to remain vigilant, as bears exhibiting predatory behavior may continue such actions. The campsite has since been closed.
This incident follows a similar attack in Florida in May, where a black bear killed a man and his dog. Data from Florida Fish and Wildlife officials shows 15 recent cases involving physical contact between humans and bears, with dogs often involved.
