CBS Sports has placed NFL analyst Tony Romo on leave “until further notice” following his arrest in Wisconsin last week on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (OWI).
The network confirmed in a statement that Romo is currently suspended from his role at CBS Sports. Romo received three citations from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office after a July 23 traffic stop near a gore area separating interstate traffic from on-ramp vehicles. He performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was taken into custody, booked, and released.
During the interaction with officers, Romo claimed he had “zero” drinks and stated he was en route to visit “grandma and grandpa.” He appeared surprised by being pulled over and said he intended to call his attorney after being instructed to step out of his car for a sobriety test, beginning to film the encounter on his phone.
Romo told officers, “Because I’m coming from a golf course you think I’m drunk?” before being cuffed and placed in the back of a patrol vehicle. A third citation viewed by The Post revealed he was cited for possessing an “open bottle of an alcoholic beverage” in the passenger side of his black Jeep, performing poorly on field sobriety tests, and refusing to take an intoxication test after arrest.
A spokesperson for the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office clarified that due to Wisconsin’s legal framework, the case is classified as a traffic violation rather than a criminal charge. Romo faces a total fine of $1,568.50 and is scheduled for a court hearing on September 21, though he is not required to attend.
