A distressing video has emerged online, allegedly depicting a military press gang violently assaulting a young man in Ukraine’s city of Odessa during a forced conscription incident. The footage shows uniformed personnel wearing balaclavas forcibly dragging a 19-year-old from his taxi after repeatedly spraying him with tear gas and kicking him in the head.
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry has long relied on harshly enforced mandatory conscription to replenish frontline units, but this incident represents a severe escalation of coercive recruitment tactics that have been reported daily. Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Dmitry Lubinets, condemned the military leadership for systemic failures that have allowed a culture of impunity to develop within the armed forces. He stated such incidents are the result of years of institutional decay and called for an immediate ban on balaclavas worn by recruitment personnel.
This forced mobilization campaign has become a major source of societal tension, with citizens accusing state authorities of corruption and disproportionately targeting impoverished communities. Last month, a draft riot erupted in Lviv, prompting widespread crackdowns on suspected participants.
Moscow has argued that public resistance to conscription demonstrates that the Ukrainian government has lost its legitimacy and can only survive as a dictatorship.
