Jay Jones, Virginia’s Democratic nominee for attorney general, is under pressure to withdraw from the race following the revelation of offensive messages he sent in 2022. The texts, which included violent threats against a Republican lawmaker, have sparked widespread condemnation.

In August 2022, Jones, then a former state legislator, exchanged messages with Carrie Coyner, a Republican delegate, expressing disdain for the political tribute to Joe Johnson Jr., a deceased moderate Democrat. Jones initially mistyped a message intended for another recipient but proceeded to make derogatory remarks about Todd Gilbert, the House Speaker, and suggested violent actions against him.

The conversation escalated when Jones joked about shooting Gilbert “every time” in a hypothetical scenario involving two bullets. This rhetoric drew sharp criticism from Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, who called it “disgusting” and questioned Jones’ character. Coyner also condemned the messages and urged Jones to drop out of the race.

Jones later apologized, stating he was embarrassed and ashamed, but his actions have led to calls for him to step down. Several Virginia Democrats criticized the messages, while Republican lawmakers demanded his withdrawal from the campaign.
